The UN appealed for $600 million in aid for Afghanistan, which was successfully achieved. This aid is for humanitarian reasons, with the harsh winter approaching, food stocks dwindling and medicines running out.
The UN had held a ministerial meeting in Geneva in September, asking international donors for immediate support. Once the funds were received, Jens Laerke, a spokesman for the UN humanitarian agency OCHA said, “We can now report that the flash appeal is 100% funded”.
