The Organization of Islamic Countries came together, at the behest of Pakistan, to help Afghanistan by showing solidarity and agreeing to help Afghanistan financially and otherwise.
The 17th extraordinary session of Organization of Islamic Cooperation’s (OIC) Council of Foreign Ministers was held in Islamabad to discuss the humanitarian situation in Afghanistan. In conclusion the members agreed that it is OIC’s duty to protect a brotherly country.
The participants also called upon the international community to play its due role in ensuring humanitarian assistance to the people of Afghanistan to prevent further unrest. Pakistan proposed a six-point framework which include food security and economic revival besides institutional capacity building to counter-terrorism.
A “Humanitarian Trust Fund” was agreed upon, which would serve as a vehicle to channel humanitarian assistance to Afghanistan – this will also include other international organizations that are willing to provide humanitarian support. Pakistan pledged $30 million while other countries also did the same, with Saudia Arabia pledging more than $250 million.
