Russia announced an indefinite closure of the Nordstream natural gas supply pipeline, which pumps gas into Germany.
On 2nd September, Russia’s Gazprom said that natural gas supplies via the Nord Stream 1 pipeline would remain shut down after it was discovered that the main gas turbine at the Portovaya compressor station near St. Petersburg had an oil leak – this was discovered during a joint inspection with Siemens Energy which maintains the turbine.
This comes in the wake of sever economic sanctions against Russia based on the Ukraine – Russia conflict. As winter approaches, Europe is desperate to find alternatives to Russian gas supplies, which make up 40% of Europe’s consumption.
