Reports came out of India that more people were arrested for illegal uranium trade in India. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Pakistan demanded an investigation into this.
The police in Indian Jharkhand state arrested seven people for possessing and planning to sell 6 kg of ‘mineral uranium’ in the black market, according to The Indian Express.
Illegal uranium trade in India has happened before. Earlier in May, 7 kg of uranium was being sold by individuals in the Indian state of Maharashtra. India’s questionable controls and black market activity are a cause of concern, and Pakistan wants this investigated.
Pakistan’s foreign office said, “The United Nations Security Council Resolution 1540 and the IAEA Convention on the Physical Protection of Nuclear Material (CPPNM) make it binding on states to ensure stringent measures to prevent nuclear material from falling into wrong hands.”
