Saudi Yemen Peace Agreement

Latest Pakistan Political Economic News

It has come to light that there may be a Saudi Yemen peace agreement as per a new policy effort from both sides.

In this expected Saudi Yemen peace agreement, reportedly, Houthis are focusing on steps to lift the blockade on Houthi-held ports and Sanaa airport. In return, there is the promise from the Houthis for truce talks.

This will help end a costly conflict with Saudi Arabia and help resolve the humanitarian crisis in Yemen. The Houthi leader Abdulmalik al-Houthi committed to an Omani delegation that visited Sanaa in June, to enter into ceasefire discussions immediately after the blockade is lifted in line with the latest proposal from U.N. envoy Martin Griffiths. Riyadh is reportedly open to a deal but “would need some additional guarantees from Oman and Iran”. In this regard, US envoy Tim Lenderking and U.N. envoy Martin Griffiths visited Riyadh last week where they met Saudi, Yemeni and Omani officials.

The coalition intervened in Yemen in March 2015 after the Houthis ousted the internationally accepted government from Sanaa. Resultantly, this conflict has caused widespread war and devastation in the peninsula, with Yemeni cities lying in ruins and Saudi infrastructure and cities being targeted.
