The US handed over command to the Afghan Government in a ceremony in Kabul. US General Austin Scott Miller — the top US general in Afghanistan relinquished his command to the government.
In addition to that, General Miller handed over his duties to two US generals — one will oversee US military action from Central Command headquarters in Florida while the other will command the 650 troops who are to remain in Afghanistan for security duty. General Miller is the longest serving US military officer to oversee NATO and US forces in Afghanistan. He said he had encouraged the Taliban officials to consider that it is important military sides set the conditions for a peaceful and political settlement in Afghanistan. … But we know that with that violence, it would be very difficult to achieve a political settlement.
General Miller had been in Afghanistan since 2018, and in May was charged by US President with organizing the final withdrawal of US troops. Since that decision, most of the remaining 2,500 American troops in Afghanistan have left and handed over Bagram Air Base to the Afghan forces.
